Mt. Thompson Memorial Gardens abounds with lovely gardens with plenty of trees and flowers to complement our historic art deco West Chapel and tranquil modern East Chapel.
Funeral webcasting is available at both our chapels where the funeral service is live streamed and recorded for family members and friends to be part of the service if they are unable to attend in person
North Chapel layout
West Chapel
Mt. Thompson Memorial Garden’s heritage-listed West Chapel was constructed in 1934 along with the other main buildings. In 2007, Mt. Thompson Memorial Gardens set aside funds for an extensive restoration of the West Chapel.
The West Chapel’s original features included walls lined to a height of seven feet in black and dove grey Queensland marble, and floor designed in Terrazzo with marble surrounds.
A flight of two marble steps gave access from the chapel to the chancel, in which a marble catafalque was built to hold the coffin. The West Chapel’s main decorative feature was a mural painted by Brisbane artist William Bustard. All of the chapel's original features were intact, with the exception of Bustard’s mural.
During the intervening years, changes in design and architectural styles meant that some of the West Chapel’s features were modified, including the addition of pew seating and a change to the chancel’s configuration.
During the restoration, pews were removed from the West Chapel and replaced with single chairs, more in line with Mt. Thompson Memorial Gardens’ earlier days. The original marble floors and lead lighting were faithfully restored and the catafalque was returned to its original configuration.
North Chapel layout
East Chapel
Architect Adrian Pooley won an award for his contemporary design of the majestic Mt. Thompson Memorial Gardens’ East Chapel. Avant-garde architect Dr Karl Langer – who was cremated at Mt. Thompson Memorial Gardens after his death in 1969 – conceived the attached enclave and courtyard.
The recent refurbishment not only reinvigorated Pooley’s vision, but the sleek, modern appearance of the East Chapel contrasts distinctly with the art deco West Chapel.
Airy and bright with modern lighting and a tranquil colour scheme, the chapel features a marble and timber podium and contemporary seating.
The recent refurbishments of our East and West Chapels were carefully designed to be in keeping with their history and their architects’ original designs.
The chapel is now fully wheelchair accessible, and includes amenities for people with disabilities and we have also installed the latest audio-visual technology.
Each chapel has a large plasma screen and hi-fi sound system to cater for people who want to incorporate slideshows or music into their funeral services. This helps you to create a more personalised and interactive memorial for your loved one.
