Artist Leonard Shillam was commissioned in 1954 to create St. George and the Dragon panel sculpture for the War Memorial at Mt. Thompson Memorial Gardens.
Overlooking the war veterans section, the sandstone carving is several metres high and more than 20 metres long. At its base is carved the phrase: “They gave that we might not fear”.
Mt. Thompson Memorial Gardens is also the final resting place of many dignitaries, including Sir Colin Thomas Hannah and Sir John Lavarack, both former Governors of Queensland; Sir Arthur Leslie MacDonald, former head of the Australian Army and Australian Defence Force; and the Right Honourable Sir Arthur William Fadden, the 13th Prime Minister of Australia.
